3-Part Specification
Part 1 - General
1.01 Definitions
- This specification refers to Expanko Cork flooring
- Installer is defined as competent experienced personnel assigned to install the flooring material
1.02 Installer Experience Level
- A. Installer must be experienced and competent in the installation of resilient tile flooring materials. Installer must install tile as per instructions provided by Expanko, Inc.
1.03 Description of Work
- A. Prepare sub-floor per manufacturers instructions in areas specified to receive Expanko Cork flooring.
- Install flooring material using manufacturers recommended installation products in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
- Finish, clean and protect floor per manufacturers recommendations.
1.04 Delivery, Storage and Handling
- All flooring materials are to be delivered to the job site 72 hours prior to installation.
Part 2 - Products
2.01 General
- Product recommendations and installation and maintenance instructions are based upon Expanko Cork flooring.
- B. Contact Expanko, Inc. for detailed instructions on sub-floor preparation, installation and maintenance.
2.02 Approved Manufacturers

2.03 Submittals
- Submit product data, samples and installation and maintenance recommendations for each item specified.
- Submit two samples approximately 6" X 6" in dimension to illustrate product shade, design and finish. Samples will be used as a standard for material to be installed.
2.04 Warranties
- Manufacturer shall provide a ten (10) year warranty against manufacturing defects.
2.05 Materials
- Cork flooring shall meet the following specifications.
- Expanko Cork flooring shall be made of 100% granulated cork. Tile shade shall be consistent throughout the thickness of the tile.
- Style: Specify number as listed on manufacturers sample
- Physical Properties:
- Dimensions: Specify tile dimension and thickness in inches
- Standard dimensions: 12" X 12" and 24" X 24" in 3/16" and 5/16" thickness.
- Custom dimensions: Specify exact dimensions in inches.
- Finishes: Specify heat cured oil modified matte polyurethane, natural carnauba wax or unfinished.
- Slip resistance: Material shall exceed all ADA requirements
- Fire resistance: .437 W/m2K
- Density: 31.22 lbs/ft3
- Material shall meet Federal specification LLL-T-43 lb, Type 1 & 2.
- Cork floor tile shall be coated on the back side with a balancing material to prevent tile curling.
- Tiles shall be packaged face to face in shipping and storage cartons.
Part 3 - Execution
3.01 Sub-Floor Preparation
- Prepare concrete or plywood sub-floor according to manufacturers recommendations
- Conduct calcium chloride moisture tests to ensure that moisture emission levels are less than 3 lbs/1000ft2/24 hours.
- On concrete sub-floors, apply a water based primer/sealer as recommended by manufacturer.
- Provide detailed sub-floor preparation guidelines to those responsible for sub-floor preparation.
3.02 Application
- Floor tile installation shall commence when all other trades have completed work.
- Conditions on site for acclimation and installation must be maintained for 72 hours prior, during and 72 hours after installation between 65ºF and 75ºF with relative humidity between 45% and 75%.
- Compare tile with submitted samples to ensure installation of the correct materials.
- Inspect material as it is installed for manufacturing defects.
- Maintain sub-floor temperature for 72 hours prior, during and 72 hours after installation between 65ºF and 75ºF.
- Install Expanko Cork flooring material according to manufacturers instructions.
- Tile pattern: (specify).
- Install material using only those adhesives, sealers and floor preparation materials recommended by the manufacturer.
- Floor covering shall be rolled with a 3 section 100lb. roller 3 times after installation.
- Provide detailed manufacturers installation instructions to floor installer.
3.03 Curing, Cleaning and Protection
- After installation, the cork floor tiles will require a minimum of 72 hours to set. Do not sand, finish or clean floor during this period. After 72 hours, the floor should be cleaned with a well wrung-out damp mop and a mild detergent such as ivory liquid. Do not clean unfinished tiles with any liquid before finish application.
- On wax finished tiles, apply and buff an additional coat of paste wax after installation.
- On unfinished tiles apply either three coats of paste wax or three coats of polyurethane as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Only foot traffic shall be permitted on floor for 72 hours after installation. Do not use rolling carts, ladders or any other object on the floor that can cause damage.
- Protect the floor against scratching and gouging with material suited to the type of traffic it will be submitted to during the completion of construction/renovation.
- AAfter completion of construction, the floor shall be cleaned according to manufacturers instruction.
- Provide manufacturers detailed post-installation maintenance instructions to those responsible for post-installation maintenance.
